It’s how we power our homes, how we heat and cool them, how we cook and our transport. Fully electrifying our households is key to reducing our carbon footprint.

Whether you live in an apartment or a house, Electrify Canberra wants to connect you with the solutions for you and your neighbours.

We encourage those who can, and support those who can't, to electrify six key things in their homes: hot water, indoor heating/cooling, stove tops, rooftop solar, battery storage and transport.

Electrify Canberra grew out of the idea that whole streets and suburbs can shift from gas and petrol to efficient electric homes and transport. This approach is often called “Suburb Zero” and has been championed in Australia by engineer and Rewiring Australia founder Saul Griffith.

We know Canberrans are eager to join the rapidly growing movement to 'electrify everything' - cutting emissions, lowering bills, and making homes healthier and more comfortable.

  • An electrified household is powered solely by electricity. To achieve an electrified household, fossil fuel appliances such as gas cooktops and petrol cars are replaced with energy efficient, electric-powered versions.

  • In the average Australian household, there are six pieces of equipment that could be installed, converted to electric, or upgraded to be more efficient:

    1. Rooftop solar

    2. Battery storage

    3. Stove top

    4. Indoor heating and cooling

    5. Hot water

    6. An electric vehicle

  • Everyone in the community can replace gas and grid electricity with cheap, locally produced solar. To make this work, all households need to sign up to an electricity retailer that is participating in a pilot. The retailer will offer reduced bills, regardless of how much rewiring a household is able to participate in.

  • Electrifying your home will not only slash emissions, but it will save households money on energy bills. By 2030, an electrified household will save an average of $5,000 per year on their energy and fuel costs. Currently, lower-income homes spend nearly double their earnings on energy costs.

  • Ideally, no. The sooner you electrify your home, the sooner you will start to save money. Equipment such as solar panels are proven to pay off their installation cost in the first 2-4 years, and they provide free electricity for well over 10 years.
