They bought the house in 1996, when it still had gas hot water and a gas heater in the sitting room. The gas heater went fairly early, after it gave their daughter headaches. They replaced it with a wood heater, which they were very fond of and used for years, even while the rest of the house kept changing.

A move to Canberra in 2019 gave Paul the opening he had been waiting for.

For years, he had been interested in science and aware of the need to act on global warming. He had also wanted an electric car since around 2010, but the timing and circumstances never quite lined up. That changed when a new job brought him from Melbourne to Canberra. Selling a property in Sydney meant he could buy a more affordable ground-floor unit in Canberra and still have enough left over to seriously consider an EV.

Retired ANU academic Pam says her journey of transitioning began when her heating failed back in 2017. Since then, it’s made economic sense to continue electrifying her home but acknowledges it needs to be easier for others to do the same.
